Today, Thursday 27 July, Cumbria County Council’s Cabinet received a paper on Transport for the North.
Stewart Young, Leader of Cumbria County Council, said: “Transport for the North will have a major influence on transport investment in the north of England, so we have made sure Cumbria has had a strong voice at the table as they have developed their Strategic Transport Plan. In June TfN published their latest update and it’s testament to our hard work behind the scenes that Cumbrian projects are so high up the investment agenda – including recognition of the need to improve connections between the west coast of Cumbria and the north east coasts.
“The next step is to put TfN on a statutory footing. We had hoped to be able to formally sign up today, but we cannot because Government has not yet agreed the necessary regulations which would provide clarity about role and powers of TfN. This is incredibly frustrating, but we will keep lobbying the Government to stop the delays, and to provide the investment Cumbria needs in our crumbling infrastructure.”
